为进一步加强和改进大学生人文素质教育，学校于2015年4月27日成立“大学生素质教育中心实体化筹备组”，推进素质教育中心实体化建设工作，以北京科技大学艺术教育中心为基础（艺术教育中心成立于1995年，其前身为1984年设置的社会科学及其文学艺术研究室），整合了北京科技大学学生处、团委、文法学院、马克思主义学院、外国语学院、经管学院、机械学院工业设计系、冶金与生态工程学院以及冶金与材料史研究院、国家大学生文化素质教育基地、北京市大学生素质教育基地、文化素质拓展中心等相关单位的素质教育资源，于2016年11月，根据《关于成立北京科技大学人文素质教育中心的通知》（校发[2016]69号），正式成立北京科技大学人文素质教育中心。中心直属北京科技大学，挂靠于文法学院，下设文史教研室、美育教研室、国学与现代社会教研室、创新与交际教研室。

自成立以来，中心全面学习贯彻党的教育方针、习近平总书记关于对教育的重要论述、全国教育大会精神，围绕“立德树人”根本任务，坚持积极践行“五育并举”“三全育人”的教育模式。以习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想为指导，以社会主义核心价值观为引领，创新育人模式，统筹布局创新平台，在师资队伍建设、人才培养、资源平台建设、学科建设等多方面做出了一系列改革创新举措，成效显著，为学校人文素质教育育人体系的完善和发展奠定了坚实基础。
